If your doctor can identify the source for declining levels—for instance, weight gain or a particular medication—he or she may first address that problem. For example, low-t can speed bone loss, so your doctor may recommend a bone density test to see whether you also need treatment for osteoporosis. For instance, being overweight, having diabetes or thyroid problems, and taking certain medications, such as glucocorticoids and other steroids, can affect levels. Testosterone levels peak by early adulthood and drop as you age—about 1% to 2% a year beginning in the 40s. Testosterone also fosters the production of red blood cells, boosts mood, keeps bones strong, and aids thinking ability. Produced by the testicles, it is responsible for male characteristics like a deep voice, muscular build, and facial hair.
However, the severity of acne seemed to be linked to the ratio of androgen to estrogen. Strangely, one man who was receiving placebo injections also developed acne during the experiment. The men who developed acne tended to be younger or had a history of severe acne during adolescence."7 Considering that testosterone is a potent androgen, this was a drastic increase. One study, which was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2004, looked at eunuchs – men who had been castrated and whose bodies therefore no longer produced testosterone.
Testosterone can also be bound to albumin, a protein in the blood. Testosterone exists in your body in different forms. New hairs become finer and finer until there’s no hair left at all and the follicles become dormant.
Some doctors may prescribe testosterone off-label to females to improve libido, but this use has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the American Urological Association (AUA), 4 in 10 males ages 45 years and older have low testosterone. Testosterone is a hormone that can affect appearance and sexual development, stimulate sperm production and sex drive, and help build muscle and bone mass. Symptoms can be subtle, but treatment may help if the symptoms affect your lifestyle. Males may experience low testosterone as they get older or due to some health conditions.
When testosterone levels are insufficient, either due to conditions like hypogonadism or aging-related decline, muscle fibers may not develop uniformly. Even if your levels are low and you have symptoms, low-t therapy is not always the first course of action. Millions of men use testosterone replacement therapy to restore low levels and feel more alert, energetic, mentally sharp, and sexually functional. While falling testosterone levels are a normal part of aging, certain conditions can hasten the decline. Although women have much lower levels of testosterone than men do, there is enough to potentially cause androgenetic hair loss. DHT is found in skin, hair follicles, and the prostate. Having high levels of testosterone does not necessarily cause hair loss.
